What does it mean to be a 21st Century violinist?
These are the days to diversify, be flexible and above all be knowledgeable in your specialized area.
The music industry has been in flux, changing and re-incarnating over the past little while, and its artisans have had to jump chasms of change to keep up. The bottom line is that a person will go after whatever it is they really want, and will do whatever it takes to get it. It has ALWAYS been about patience and perseverance.
Being a contemporary musician means you have to know more than just your area of expertise, more than just a little about business and marketing, and more than ever about being your own producer, recording engineer, live sound technician and many other aspects.
The alternative is to surround yourself with others (in a team spirit) who know how to do all the stuff you cannot cover within your capacity, because it will all have to get done one way or another along your career. Oh, and somehow, you have to delegate all these ‘jobs’ so you can be the creative, practice skilled musician who writes, and creates wonderful sounds and BE the polished musician when you get onto the stage. This is a VERY time intensive career.
And really, being the 21st century violinist means you need to be able to play almost ANY style of music, so you can work with others in any given situation. That’s what I can do.
