     Girls With Guitars Showcase

Currently the “Girls” feature three prominent Utah women artists. They are Algie Powers, Esther Fors, and Theresa Ellis. They play not only some of their original works about historic Utah events and pioneer story songs, but also a nice variety of classic rock, swing, folk and classical. They realize their music using guitars, bass, mandolin, accordion, and fiddle with vocals.

Algie Powers, born to Lithuanian emigrant parents who settled in the Chicago area, studied commercial art there and is currently a web designer, does fantastic pencil portraits and lives in the Salt Lake area. She has always enjoyed singing, and is a self-taught musician, vocalist, songwriter, and plays guitar, piano, and accordion as well. She has appeared on projects with Kurt Bestor, and Michael McLean, and was involved with the Primary Children’s Hospital seat belt commercial campaign “Hold On To Dear Life”. She’s written some very special songs about Utah history and original pioneer songs that tell stories preserving history about the Mormon movement and the triumphs and tragedies of crossing the plains to our beautiful Utah lands. One such song called “Teachings of the Trek” was recorded with Theresa Ellis playing fiddle. You can find it at her site www.algie.com.

Theresa Ellis hails from Detroit, migrated south to Nashville, Tennessee and has performed with many famous musicians such as Alabama, Ray Stevens and appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. Spanning almost her whole life she’s had a music career singing and playing solo violin, fiddle, and in string-sectional recordings with the historic Motown sound in Detroit, solo with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and with the Nashville and Salt Lake Symphonies. She has a formal music degree and developed the concept of Celtic Jazz with her music creations. Currently living in Eden she is an arranger, recording artist and has recently started writing songs. You can preview some of her works here at LodestarProductions.

Esther Fors is a Salt Lake City native, has been playing music for 30 years, and started her career as a dancer in a troupe doing vaudeville until she was 18. At a young age she was singing and playing the electric bass guitar. Esther was the character “Salubria” singing with Saliva Sisters in 2000-01 and currently is performing with the Daydreamers and the band called Free Range Chickens. She enjoys playing jazz standards, old time music, and the blues, and has been influenced by the group Newgrass Revival. Her group associates with the non-profit Heart and Soul which takes music to shut-ins like folks at retirement residencies. Esther is active in the compassionate-care industry, providing health care services for the elderly.
